A disclosure: I shy away from sharing more ‘woo woo’ things because many people who feel more religious find it to be off-putting. As a family, we go to church and I believe there is a co-creative element to all that we do. So, all that to say: using crystals or herbs in a way that is a bit magicky doesn’t have to be separate from prayer or from your reverence for God. I find it to be a way to observe the elements and be intentional. To include ourselves in the wheel.

Robin Wall Kimmerer, the brilliant author of Braiding Sweetgrass (required reading in my opinion) talks about the law of reciprocity. It’s the fundamental belief that we should give back to the earth from which we take and that we are a part of the entire ecosystem, not just the beneficiary of its riches. We should therefore not only try to do no harm to the environment but also actively contribute positively to it. If you are going to take, then you also give. I feel that gifting your garden with some stones from the earth is a way to honor and give thanks to the land that you are using for nourishment.

That said, let’s talk about crystals (or if you prefer: gems, rocks, stones).

The stones I used this year … more on this below

It has been long believed since our ancestor’s ancestor’s cared for the land, that all plants, animals, rocks, and ‘things’ carried a frequency and life. It is the vibrational quality of each thing in existence that makes it uniquely itself. Flowers, water, people - we all carry a vibrational frequency that is invisible but very much there. That’s why you connect quickly with some people and not with others, or how someone can walk into a room and you immediately notice them - it’s their frequency, their gravitas. All things have this if we get quiet enough to notice. Some of us are drawn to certain flowers because of this. And some flowers are incredibly popular because of this, like the rose. Roses carry the highest frequency (this is real science) and therefore have a lot of influence on us. This means they can help heal us, calm us, move us in a direction.

When it comes to stones, they too have frequencies and align with some specific purposes or outcomes. If you believe in this or not, I find it fascinating to study and play with. I’ve had crystal companions much of my life, from when I was very young to now when I am more aware of what my needs are.

At a basic level, using flowers, crystals, herbs, or even Western medicine is all about awareness. It pushes us to look inward at our needs - what are we seeking? What are we missing? What needs our support or healing? What desires are below the surface?

I absolutely LOVE to use crystals in the garden, along with blessings and fun rituals like placing prayers or bible verses under stones. It’s all about sending your intention and vibration down into the earth, to release it to come back in other ways.

Below I’ll share all about which crystals to use and how to use them…
