Mastering the Fall Garden
Everything you need to do to plan & prep, plus my garden map & best advice
It’s the first week of August. This time is typically marked by Back To School (capitalized for emphasis on the chaos), and the garden getting … unruly. As I did my morning walk, I noticed the very first signs of Autumn arriving. Amidst the stifling heat and near-constant humidity, the trees are telling us, “It’s almost over, my friends”. Sparkling gold and ruby reds are peeking through, enticing me to finally embark on the Fall garden.
Each pre-Autumn I like to set intentions and bring some whimsy into the fold. It’s a witchy season and a cozy season, a cinnamon sticks and stew season. There’s much to celebrate and learn- much to do as always. However, with summer passing, so is the slowness of languishing in the heat. Summer is an inhale in our home - a pause. Autumn is a bit more bustling, complemented by the quiet cold starting to dance into the evenings and mornings.
I’m a touch late to planning this year’s fall garden, as I’m quite convinced that I’m allergic to the summer garden. Bugs are eating me alive, and the weeds are reaching out with thorns and bristles, pushing me away. They want me to leave them be and keep my ideas to myself.
Of course, I shall not do that - I will perservere. The fall garden is my absolute favorite. I find the food to be preferred in my home and the upkeep much easier and more enjoyable.
