Hello dear friend, come on in.
Let’s grow together, shall we? Gardens, larders, and lives.
I’m Bailey Van Tassel, a writer, wife, mother, gardener and kitchen garden designer. I’m here to teach you how to grow your own vegetables and incorporate the garden into your everyday life with ease and simplicity.
What we’re doing “In The Garden”
You and I are embarking on a journey together - arm in arm we’ll build a homestead each week while exploring what it means to live with intention, to grow our own food, and to pursue a life that is simple and connected.
My desire for this substack is to be able to share more intimately, but also be wildly helpful for *your* journey of gardening and getting back to basics.
We’re growing our horticulture skillset, as well as adding a layer of inspiration through seasonal and holistic living ideas. As your guide, I’m sharing the reality of my personal journey of gardening 365 days a year.
What can you expect here?
First of all, I get to share via all mediums here (photos, essays, videos, voice notes even!) and we ARE DOING IT ALL, friend!
AS A PAID SUBSCRIBER, YOU CAN EXPECT (for the price of one latte a month):
A WEEKLY NEWSLETTER: In the Garden is your gentle reminder each week of what to be doing out there in the veg patch. I share what we should be focusing on each week, giving you ideas for weekend projects and ways to live more inspired by nature. Here you will also find more intimate information about my actual gardening practices, get never-before-seen design insight.
GROW GUIDES & DEEP DIVES: We are going all-in on the intel. No gatekeeping when it comes to actually growing veggies, managing your soil, and getting good results. I share grow guides for vegetables and flowers, as well as the lessons that you need when you need them. We will explore topics that can help you get the most out of your space and efforts in the garden.
MONTHLY MUSTS: At the beginning of each month we’ll explore the “musts” which are my recommendations for what to do in the garden, what to read, what to make, and what to musings we can muse together (see what I did there?).
SEASONAL EDITS: Each Spring, Summer, Autumn, and WINTER we will get inspired and gather around the season together. We’ll dig into what to read, prepare, and focus on so that our days are filling with intention.
PERSONAL Q&As WITH ME: this is where we get to go all on “ask me ANYTHING” and explore business, motherhood, marriage, current events, and of course gardening.
COMMUNITY: You get unfettered access to a gardener (me) who is in the thick of actually growing their own food and a community of others who can bring you along beside them and make your dream garden - and life - an abundant reality.

A little more background:
I started gardening just over seven years ago, in the middle of the suburbs, surrounded by concrete. I had no idea what I was doing, but felt this deep urge to reconnect to nature and do something for my family that would create character and combat the convenience model we were living in. Having grown up on a small hobby farm, I felt in my bones that nurturing land was vital to my existence but had no clue where to start. I had become so disconnected.
I started sharing online and after about three years, I had found my groove, which was when I started a business called The Kitchen Garden Society, which I ran for four years teaching people how to garden in their unique space.
My business felt a bit too business and not enough real-life, so that is why I shifted over here to Substack. To create a place where we all come together and celebrate the seasons, anchoring our families in the cycle of the vegetable garden, rooting ourselves into that cornerstone of growing our own food and letting it in turn make a landscape out of every fiber of our beings.
Tactically, it can feel overwhelming so this is where I come along to bring you with me - week by week showing you what I do in my garden starting January 1st all the way to December 31st. Along the way, I teach about my design principles, techniques for tending to the garden, sand hare all the to-dos for your hardiness zones, and overall be with you in celebrating a seasonal life.
The quick and dirty: This is everything that you’ve come to know and love over at The Kitchen Garden Society, mixed with my podcast and my weekly newsletter - all in one single place and with the ability for us to chat and have real conversations.
A Big Huge Group Chat!
This is where I am most excited! I would love if you joined in the conversation to be a part of a community of people who share your interests. Participate in the comments section, chat in the chats, introduce yourself and your hardiness zone, and support me and this work with a subscription.
