There’s no doubt that I’ve been slowly going insane waiting for my new garden. I haven’t had my hands in the soil in close to six months and I’m unraveling a bit. With a book about to come out (eeeek!) and a burgeoning design business, it’s been tough to not have my refuge and my stage - I teach everything you see online from my own garden.
Additionally, there is this weird pressure and hardness to making decisions about my own space as opposed to someone else’s. My emotions get much higher and it’s harder to see a clear picture of what I want - the potential of the space can cloud the reality of what works best (this is a life analogy that I am very well aware of). I designed and re-designed this garden about seven times. Once I was almost done, I called a dear friend and fantastic edible landscape designer, Christian Douglas (he’s seriously famous to me - here’s his IG), who gave me some amazing pointers but gently told me to reevaluate and start over. Oof, ego hit.
So I did and landed on an amazing design that I loved, which in turn got scrapped again in the midst of getting our dirt work done.
This new garden has been in the works for five months now, which is a relatively short amount of time given we just moved across the country. We debated on where to place my kitchen garden for a few weeks, charted the sun, and overall decided this would be the easiest to access, though does come with some drawbacks.
ALL of the considerations that I made & my priorities
To set the stage, I’ll outline below each of the considerations that we made, why we chose what we did, and give you the overall specs and plans for the garden.
